Shadow Work Journaling: 7 Prompts for Inner Healing
Shadow work has been one of the most transformative parts of my spiritual journey. As a witch, I’ve learned that facing the hidden parts of ourselves—our fears, doubts, and past wounds—can lead to profound healing. Journaling is my favorite way to do this, especially during the Waning Moon when the energy supports release. Today, I’m sharing 7 shadow work prompts that have helped me heal, along with a tip to use obsidian for support. Let’s dive into the shadows and emerge stronger together! 🌙✨
Why Shadow Work Journaling Heals My Soul
Shadow work is the practice of exploring the parts of ourselves we often hide—the “shadow” self. For me, it’s about shining a light on those dark corners to find healing and growth. I’ve found that journaling during the Waning Moon, a time of release, amplifies this process. My Lunar Alignment Guide has been a lifesaver for timing these rituals. Shadow work helps me:
Release Old Wounds: Let go of past pain that holds me back.
Understand My Fears: Face what scares me to find clarity.
Embrace My Whole Self: Love even the parts I’ve hidden.
These 7 prompts have guided me through some of my deepest healing, and I’m excited to share them with you.
7 Shadow Work Prompts for Inner Healing
1. What Fear Holds Me Back the Most?
This prompt helped me uncover a fear of failure that was keeping me from pursuing my dreams.
How I Use It: I write freely, exploring where this fear comes from—maybe a childhood memory or a past rejection. I then ask, “How can I release this fear?” I keep an obsidian stone (like this polished obsidian) nearby to ground me during this heavy work.
Why I Love It: It gets to the root of what’s blocking me.
2. What Do I Judge in Others That I Deny in Myself?
This one was tough but eye-opening. I realized I judged others’ neediness because I was afraid to admit my own.
How I Use It: I list traits I judge in others, then reflect on where I might share those traits. I journal during the Waning Moon, using my Lunar Alignment Guide to time it perfectly.
Why I Love It: It fosters self-compassion and understanding.
3. What Childhood Memory Still Hurts Me?
This prompt brought up a memory of feeling unheard as a child, which still affects how I communicate.
How I Use It: I write the memory in detail, then dialogue with my younger self: “I see you, and I’m here now.” I hold my obsidian stone to feel protected as I process the emotions.
Why I Love It: It helps me heal my inner child.
4. What Do I Feel Ashamed Of?
Facing shame is hard, but this prompt helped me release guilt over past mistakes.
How I Use It: I write about what I feel ashamed of, then reframe it with kindness: “I did the best I could at the time.” I do this during a Waning Moon ritual to let go of the shame.
Why I Love It: It’s a powerful way to forgive myself.
5. What Part of Me Feels Unlovable?
This prompt brought tears but also healing. I discovered I felt unlovable when I wasn’t perfect.
How I Use It: I journal about this belief, exploring its origins, then write affirmations: “I am enough as I am.” My obsidian stone helps me feel safe as I confront these feelings.
Why I Love It: It helps me embrace my imperfections.
6. What Do I Avoid Facing in My Life?
This prompt revealed my avoidance of conflict, which was creating tension in my relationships.
How I Use It: I write about what I’m avoiding and why, then brainstorm small steps to face it. I use my Tarot Journal to pull a card for guidance.
Why I Love It: It pushes me to grow through discomfort.
7. What Would I Do If I Weren’t Afraid?
This prompt inspired me to start Ohm Terra—I’d been afraid of failure, but this question set me free.
How I Use It: I imagine a life without fear and write down my dreams. I do this during a Waning Moon to release fear, following my Lunar Alignment Guide.
Why I Love It: It opens up a world of possibilities.
Using Obsidian for Support
Obsidian has been my rock (literally!) during shadow work. This grounding stone absorbs negative energy and protects your spirit as you face tough emotions. I keep a piece on my altar while journaling, and it helps me feel safe. You can find a beautiful piece here. I also recommend keeping a journal dedicated to shadow work—like this gorgeous hardcover journal.
